Wind Family
What we do

Free scholarships, real mentorship, a coastline shared.

24 hours of free, one-on-one instruction on the water for each selected student, paired with months of mentorship.

A Wind Family instructor sits on the sand holding a board while three young riders in helmets and impact vests stand around him at the water's edge in Watamu
  1. 01

    Scholarships

Full kitesurfing training, free of charge, for youth from local children's homes around Watamu.

  2. 02

    Mentorship

Long-term relationships between instructors, volunteers, and the children, not one-off sessions.

  3. 03

    Collaboration

Independent kite schools pooling time, gear and instructors around a shared mission, instead of competing.

  4. 04

    Stewardship

A kitesurfing culture rooted in respect for the ocean and the Watamu community.

The young riders

Season by season.

Each season brings a new group onto the water, and keeps the ones before them coming back. Some are standing up on a board for the first time; others are already riding upwind and helping the newer riders find their feet.

Refreshers

Refresher lessons

Once a rider, always part of the family.

A scholarship doesn't end when a cohort does. When life gets in the way and there's a long gap between sessions, free refresher lessons bring past riders back onto the water, and back to the level they had worked up to.
